THE UNITED STATES MARINES

INDIA COMPANY

5TH MARINE REGIMENT

SAIGON

ODE TO THE U. S. MARINES

If this paper reaches you—

If you have a moment free,

Will you read the words I pen

From deep within the heart of me?

In tears I read about Saigon

And Captives who were killed,

Oh brave youth of the battlefield

Whose life has now been stilled.

I walk alone this summer’s night

In silence and a prayer,

For Leathernecks who are dead

And now climb God’s golden stair.

If somehow I could voice the thought

To each young brave Marine

I’d tell him that I understand

Cold death from a machine!

I grieve for the blood-soaked man

In pain that welcomes death!

I grieve for the hell of strife

That takes away your breath!

Oh words of mine are futile,

They only fill a page

In tribute to the U. S. Marines- -

The victors of this age.

Sincerely;

Pearl Kell
