Minister's message - Spring 2003
Message du ministre - Printemps 2003

Dear Friends,

This is a story I came across, I can't remember where but it goes something like this...

There is this guy who wants to learn how to dance. He does what he knows how to do, so he goes to a book- store and buys a book called Learn How to Dance. He takes the book home, studies it meticulously and does everything that the book tells him to do. When the instructions say dip, he dips; when it says do a pirouette, he pirouettes; when the instructions say heal-toe-toe-heal, he does it. So serious a student is he that he cuts out footprints and places them on the kitchen floor, so that he will know exactly where to put his foot down and in the proper sequence. Finally, after much practicing he feels that he is now accomplished.

He calls his wife into the room and says, "Watch these moves"! So with the book open in his hand, he reads aloud and as he does so, he performs the correct sequence step by step. The book says put your right foot in, put your right foot out - so he puts his right foot in, puts his right foot out. The book says put your left foot in, put your left foot out - so he puts his left foot in, puts his left foot out. So he keeps reading and moving and reading and moving until finally, he breathlessly leans against the counter.  He says to his wife, "What do you think? I executed it perfectly."

To which she responds: " You executed it alright. You killed it".

The dazed husband replies, "But I followed all the rules.  I did everything exactly as the book said."

His wife looks at him and says, "You forgot the most important part. Where was the music?" So she puts on a CD and says: "Try it now. Stop worrying about the instructions, just follow the lead of the music." Then she holds out her hand, he gets up and takes it. The music begins and the next thing he knows he's dancing - without the book.

It's an interesting metaphor that makes a point about God or the presence of God in our lives. We need to stop and listen to the music, that is we need to stop and listen to the leading of God in our lives. Linguists use big, dressed up words like "modal indicators of necessity" and "modal indicators of possibility." Words and phrases that begin with: should/shouldn't; must/musn't; can/can't; etc. Whenever we see or use or hear these words they are coming from some book within us that dictates the way in which we move or conversely do not move. Following the rules is important. Following God is life-giving. Sometimes our faith leads us to break rules and do what we know is right!

In Christ,
