TIPSUsing the AstroDienst Atlas   Back to previous page

Click on Astrology Atlas Query in the upper left corner of the AstroDienst front page.

Type in the name of the place of birth in the window next to Birth town. The search can be more selective by clicking on the drop down window showing "the Whole World". If the birth place is in the United States, click on "the USA".

After clicking on the Search button, the atlas program will list 3 results.

If Shangri-la in Florida (FL), USA ((US) is the correct birth place, then click on Shangri-la.

The latitude and longitude data for Shangri-la will appear in the lower left corner of the next screen. Latitude data is always north or south of the equator. In this example, the latitude is shown as 27n53, meaning that Shangri-la is located 27 degrees and 53 minutes north of the equator. The longitude is shown as 82w46, meaning 82 degrees and 46 minutes west of Greenwich, England, U. K. (Greenwich has been designated to be neutral ground 0W0 (Long: 0 degrees 00 minutes West).

The year, month, day and time of birth can be entered to get the Daylight Saving Time. In the above example, the results show "Time Zone: 4 h west, Daylight saving". This means Daylight Saving Time was in effect on July 7, 1977 at 7 am in Shangri-la, Florida, USA.

AstroDienst adjusts the Time Zone with Daylight Saving Time (DST) by removing 1 hour from Eastern Standard time (5 hr minus 1 hr = 4 hr).

However, the Time Zone that Insight Calendar uses is Standard Time, as DST is calculated separately.
So, 1 hour needs to be added to the Time Zone shown in the AstroDienst atlas. In this
example for Shangri-la, Florida, it is necessary to add 1 hr to the Time Zone of 4 hr, which gives 5 hr:

                                      Time Zone: 4 h west + 1 h = 5 h west

The way AstroDienst calculates the Time Zone is very confusing. In most astrology programs it is straightforward, one either enters the Standard Time Zone in the Time Zone box and the Daylight Saving Time, if any, in a separate box, or one enters the Daylight Standard Time Zone, without any further entry for DST. If there is an extra hour of DST, the program subtracts that hour from the Standard Time Zone. If there is no DST, then the program simply uses the Standard Time Zone. But if the program sees that the user entered a Daylight Time Zone, then there is no query for DST.

When entering birth data in Insight calendar, the user is requested only for the Standard Time Zone.
If there is DST, it is requested in a separate section, and the extra hour is subtracted from the Standard Time, but the resulting Daylight Time Zone is not seen by the user to avoid confusion.
