Definition & Understanding of Decimal

What is a decimal?

A decimal is a tool to represent a part (a portion) of a number....

A decimal is a number that is divided in ten parts, hundred parts, thousand parts, ...etc

Numbers that are divided into 10 parts (one decimal):

11.2 (this means 11 complete units while the 12th unit we divided it into 10 parts, we kept 2 of them and threw away the rest)

7.4 (this means 7 complete units while the 8th unit we divided it into 10 parts, we kept 4 of them and threw away the rest)

Numbers that are divided into 100 parts (two decimals):

8.23 (this represent 8 complete units while the 9th unit we divided into 100 parts, we kept 23 of them and threw away the rest)

45.42 (this represent 45 complete units while the 46th unit we divided into 100 parts, we kept 42 of them and threw away the rest)

Using the same logic you can explain to yourself what is the following numbers ;

32.46 & 876.98 & 45.1 & 765.87 & 765.53 AND 2.5

Decimals in the "metric system" mainly rest of the world except North America is represented by ",". In North America we mainly present it with ".", presently the North American continent started to use the "," ... However we shall still use the "." as much as possible in this lesson (forgive me if I make a mistake once in a while)

Numbers with no decimals:

Sometimes you find numbers that do not have decimals ... that means they are complete units

However even if a number do not have a decimal .. you can put one decimal at the extreme right followed by one zero (or several) this will not change the value of the number. This will be useful in the future especially in multiplication and division

25 is the same as 25.0 or 25.00 or 25.000 or 25.0000 etc
