Count the number of digits to the right of the decimal in each one
Add both numbers (say it is 4)
Carry the multiplication as if the decimal (coma) does not exist
Locate the decimal (coma) 4 places from the right
Remember the compensation theory mentioned before
Examples
- Multiply 4.8 by 1.1
- Total number of digits to the right of the decimal in each number = 1+1=2
- Multiplication without the decimal is 48x11=528
- Place the decimal 2 places to from the right extreme
- The result is 5.28
- Multiply 2.435 x12.2
- Total number of digits to the right of the decimal in each number = 3+1=4
- Multiplication without the decimal is 2435x122=297070
- Place the decimal 4 places from the extreme right
- The result is 29.7070
- Multiply 2.4 x .2
- Total number of digits to the right of the decimal in each number = 1+1=2
- Multiplication without the decimal is 24x2=48
- Place the decimal 2 places to from the right extreme
- The result is 0.48
- Multiply 0.4 x 0.2
- Total number of digits to the right of the decimal in each number = 1+1=2
- Multiplication without the decimal is 4x2=8
- Place the decimal 2 places to from the right extreme ....
- compensate the difference with zeros
- The result is 0.08
