Voltaire [1694-1778] Pen name of Francois Marie Arouet. French Enlightenment writer, essayist, & philosopher known for his wit, philosophical sport, & defense of civil liberties, including freedom of religion & free trade. Holograph two lines written in Latin. In the lower part of the piece, an authentification by an Italian expert in 1846. Nice engraving of a Voltaire portrait. Elegantly displayed to an overall size of 16" x 12" 1/4. The frame is brushed gilt with touches of purple, with like coloured matte, gold filets in two windows [ 3" x 4" 3/4, 3" 1/4 x 5" 3/4] . An interesting item as modestly priced Voltaire material seldom appears on the market.  $2375
