Comments: Hi Guys! I served with M/3/5's 60mm mortar section between September and
December of 1968. I was transferred to K/3/26 when they went afloat. I have been looking
for this site for a long time - found out about it through the vet that help set up the
memorial page for Father Capodanno, a Congressional of Medal of Honor recipient who died
with 2nd platoon of M/3/5 on Sept. 4, 1967. I know only a few names of people I served
with as their names are written on the back of some photographs I have. I sure remember
Operation Maui Peak! Semper Fi, Chuck Cammack |

Comments: Hi all you grunts! It's Golbeck, one of the originals that came over on
the boat in'66! I was in 1st platoon, 1st squad, 1st fire team with Barlow, Danner, and
Romball. I found Barlow and Danner, but have not been able to locate Romball. I've also
been in contact with Lett and Eckstrom. The Marine Corps locator service said no such
person as Dennis Romball was ever in the Marine Corps! How about some of you guys
e-mailing me and saying 'hello'. I'd like to know more about what happened to or with the
outfit after I was transferred to "M" 3/1 at Marble Mountain, Da Nang in Sept.
'66. I'd like to hear from Bill Mattson, or T.P. Johnson, or anyone knowing what happened
to them. Would also like to hear from or about Capt. Pettengill or Lt. J.D. Murray, or any
of the originals that came over on the Renville. |

Comments: This is a great website, you've done a fine job on it! On this Veteran's
Day weekend I just wanted to mention an inspiring novel about WWII that I've just read,
which reminded me in eloquent terms of all of the sacrifices our veterans have made for
us. I had to get a copy of the book, "The Triumph and the Glory" on amazon.com,
because they were sold out in all of the bookstores here. But enough about that, the
important thing is to remember all of the men and women who have served so nobly in our
time, especially the Vietnam vets. We owe them a debt of gratitude beyond measure. Fine
pages like yours are SO important, they are moving testimony to the courage and honor of
our veterans. |

Comments: MOST OF THIS COMMENT IS FROM A LETTER I WROTE TO THE FRIEND THAT SENT ME
THE LINK TO THIS SITE. HIS SISTER IS MARRIED TO A FORMER MIKE 3/5 VET. Great Site. Someone
put a lot of work into it. I'm sure they had tears in their eyes as they worked on it. I
haven't gone through the whole site yet but I will work my way through it. There is text
that I don't understand but I'm sure the guys that were there do. Looking at the site kind
of makes me feel not quite as big as I thought I was. I was just a swabby. In in 57 and
out in 60. Up till I started looking at this page I considered myself lucky to have only
caught the very end of Korea and out before Nam. Makes me feel a little ashamed in a way.
I've heard a lot about Nam but will never know it, not being there with so many fine young
Americans. A guy can hear about some of the shit that happened there but here it is in
living color told by the people that REALLY know. I've always been pissed off from the
git-go how the so called good Americans have treated the soldiers as they came back from
that shit hole and into another one. It probably seemed that way to a lot of the guys. Ya
know, when I'm driving down the street and see a Nam emblem on a car or truck, I get a
feeling to stop the rig and shake the dudes hand. Just the 10 or 15 minutes I spent so far
checking the page out made one hell of an impression on me. The person that is responsible
for this page deserves a big, big A-MEN BRO. Surprises the hell out of me that I'm so
impressed and affected by this page. I can and have been a cold S. O. B. at times. This
page makes an old Greek warm up a bit and lets the words and pics go straight to his heart
and then lets a tear or two find its way down his face and on to his shirt. I don't think
I'm qualified to say Semper Fi, but I am qualified to say "God Bless You All"
from the bottom of my heart. |

have been trying to make contact with Marines and Corpsmen from that time period, esp.
corpsmen. A Ken Miller found my name on another web page and put me unto this home page.
Thanks Ken. I am hoping to write a book, from the corpsmen's perpective, about our time
there. Hopefully in a few years I will be able to get to it and I would love any input you
guys may have. If any of you Marines or corpsmen want to contact me please feel free to do

Comments: Thank you Debbe for inviting a 2/5 Corpsman to your 3/5 site, you have
done a great job and is a very dignified site you can be proud of. Although no one calls
me "Doc" anymore, since being on the internet and in contact with Marines from
2/5, who still after 30 years call me "Doc" makes me feel very good. As I
searched through your site brought back many memories. I was 2nd Plt. Corpsman with Echo
2/5 69-70, Arizona, Go Noi Island, Liberty Bridge, also an area we called the Phu Nauhns,
between the Bridge and An Hoa, but don't hear anyone ever talk about it. Was it called
something else ? There are other places but I don't recall their names and regret
forgetting. Also as I was checking out the Lima 3/5 site I noted a high school classmate
Harold Hager (KIA) was with L 3/5. Thanks Debbe if you had not invited me to this site I
wouldn't have known he was with Lima 3/5. If there are any 3/5 corpsman who knew me from
Corps School or FMF training I would like to hear from you. God Bless you for all your
efforts. "Doc" Weems |

Comments: Hello, My name is Jerry L. Trent, aka, "Gunslinger." I was in
the 1st Marine Div. 3rd. Batt. 5th. Marine Reg. 3rd. Platoon. I served in 1967- 1968. I
was in operations "Swift and Essex." I 'm looking for buddies in Vietnam through
the internet, over countless hours of searching, I finally stumbled upon this sight. I was
thrilled to find it. When I looked in the Roster and in the Guestbook, so many of the
names sound familiar to me, however, the faces to the names are hard to recall. I can
remember the faces to buddies, but I can't really remember thier names. it was a long time
ago. I'm hoping to reach anybody that knows me, by signing the guestbook. Hopefully,
someone might remember my name, and I can get in touch with them. It would be very helpful
to me, and to all of us for that matter if we can reach our long lost buddies from "
over there." Good website, Keep up the good work, was very pleased with it. Thank
You. Jerry L. Trent, aka "Gunslinger." |

Comments: I am a former Marine and I am writing a book about the Marine Corps in
Vietnam. The book is an anthology with the collection of stories being mostly first person
accounts. It will also include a list of Marines awarded the Medal of Honor, the Navy
Cross and the Silver Star. On the memorial page of this website I came across the name of
Cpl. Michael J. Banovez, Jr. Below his name is an indication that he was awarded the Navy
Cross. My Navy Cross list totals 362 Marines. I have the citations for all of them. The
list does not include Michael Banovez nor have I been able to find any documentation that
he did indeed earn the Navy Cross. Do you have a copy of his citation? Did he recently
receive the award? I would certainly like to add his name to the list but I would need to
know for certain that he has the award. I would deeply appreciate a response. Semper Fi!

Comments: Hi Mike Co., My name is Mike Hayes. I left Camp Margarita in Feb 66' with
you guys as part of Fox 2/11. Did Okinawa, Fugi, Olongapo, BLT 3/5, etc., firing 105's in
your support. Later during the summer of 67', I was with the four 155 howitzers south of
DaNang (Your CP was on hill 20-something). You wonderful warriors provided perimeter
support for our team Whiskey Battery. During that time I had an additional job. Had a big
tarp and a field stove. Occasionally, when we get enough chow some of your leaders would
always make sure I took care of as many of you as possible. That is something I always
enjoyed. I remember Al Santos, Sgt. Peters, and I've spoke via internet with a dozen of
you over the past two years. I'll contact those I've spoke with and aim they to your home
page. I know your home page is new. There are alot of names still missing from Your Wall,
Al Santos, my friend, and many others who were lost on Operation Swift 9-4-67. I wish you
all well, and I'll respect you all to my death. I hope you all recall an "arti"
round that helped. Semper Fi Former- Sgt. Mike Hayes Fox & Whiskey Battery's 2/11 Jan

site...outstanding site. Served with H&S 1/5--69/70 as rifleman and on the 50 and on
an auto grenade launcher with the companies. Ate some of that Arizona dirt and humped the
area of Go Noi Island, Que Son Mountains, did the week at Liberty Bridge too like most. On
in country R&R my buddy and I crossed the off limits wire and went for a stroll down
the beach. We came to a natural stained wood contemporary looking full size house and
walked around the back of it to find a black 69 Ford sedan with 2 stars on a plate on it.
We figured we might find some MORE beer in the kitchen so we went in and opened the
fella's fridge. That's when some police type fellas grabbed us. Not before I noticed all
the steaks and brew stocked to the hilt in that fridge though. We were pointed back to our
area of beach and released. That sticks out as much as any other episode over there for
me. Work as an "emergencyman" (lineman) for New England Electric System here in

operator. Lt Wilder was plt comdr (he looked a lot like David Niven and was a class guy er
officer) a bit of a tight ass though. Top Obie was top NCO. spent about 3 months with Bn,
and then assigned to India as forward air controller. Replaced a guy named Farnsworth. Was
trained by Lt Ben Yorkoff, back seater in an F-4. Located him last Summer, he is an MD in
Towson, MD. We spoke briefly on phone, but he didn't seem too interested in memories. Also
spoke at length with then LT Thomas Mahlum who was Bn S-2 and used to wrestle with Yorkoff
at night. Both got their asses reamed by LtCol Terry Bn Cmdr for their conduct. Lt Mahlum
was eventually CO of Lima or Mike, can't remember which. He enjoys reliving the old days.
I think I knew Underwood/dog in the picture. There was a 2531 with that name in the Plt
when I was there. Worked with a guy named Bruce (Butch) Glowa from Chicago. Ran into him
at Lejeune after returning to world. Last duty at MarBarracks Brooklyn, NY. Left service,
was graduated from Hofstra University (NY) in 1975, with BBA in public accounting. Worked

internet last year by way of my girlfriend who is now my wife. I eventually made contact
with Capt, McElroy, Gunny Dinota, Billy Joe Simms & Butch Hooley, and Sgt. Clyde
"Sully" Sullivan all last Labor Day weekend and now this!! Wow!! I cant tell you
how much it means to make connection with people who I knew, they knew me and they were
THERE!! Finally, people who knew and remembered what happened and remembered those of us
who didn't make it back. I was an ammo humper in 3.5 rockets for awhile and eventually
made Sgt. Sullivan's radio operator (mike 1 alpha) until i was wounde on Nov. 7, 1967 on
Operation Essex. I am still looking for Groh, who was the old man of 1st Platoon,(I
patched you up from that mortar shrapnel you caught in the back that killed Tony and
wounded you and several others on that 1st day of Union II) & Vandergriff (sp), and
Gordon Seabloom, and Phillips from Buffalo N.Y. and Ralph Ashura,(sp?) from Univ of Ohio
(Miami), Hillbilly, and doc rockwell, (I carried you to the chopper that night the nva
tried to overrun us on UnionI. Ed, well done and may God bless each and everyone of us and
ours!! Semper Fi 'Bros!! Steve Haygood aka "Bigfoot" |

Comments: Hello Marines, this is great web page and long needed. I went to Vietnam
in Nov 69 after a year of Vietnamese language school in DC. I was assigned to the 5th
Marines HQ (S-5) working in PSYOPS, until transfered to 3/5 (S-5) on Hill 65. I was with
3/5 in the big move to LZ Baldy and a few weeks later to LZ Ross in the Quesons. Anyone
remember the gate at LZ Ross - I was the GySgt who ran the S-5. Remember LtCol Johnson? I
extended twice and transfered to Mike 3/1 when 3/5 stood down. Mike 3/1 was a CUPP unit on
hill 65 and later we moved to hill 190, north of Da Nang. I still speak good Vietnamese
and if anyone has any citations in Vietnamese who would like translation, I would be more
than happy to do it. |

Comments: What a great page! I just finished making a comment on another WEB page
about Mike Company not having a page of its own - presto! here it is. Good job! Thanks to
Debbe Reynolds for leading me in. I'll get to some stories and some photos soon. A bit of
history: The 3/5 patch you show at the top of the first page of your site - it was
designed by then-Major Joe Cody, a wonderful man and a great Marine. He did this in about
1968 just after TET. I met Joe in the summer of 1966 at Camp Lejeune. I then ran into him
again after I left the Battalion and became G-3 of Task Force X-ray. Joe was S-3 of the
Fifth Marines at the time, and our HQs was co-located in a bunker at Phu Bai. He showed me
his drawings at that time. Anybody out there know Joe? Where is he today? I have two
interesting stories about him which I'll pass on later. Best of everything to my old
Shipmates. Sincerely, Bill Rockey, United States Marine, 3rdBn, 5thMarines |
