The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the NAVY COMMENDATION MEDAL to

CORPORAL HARVEY C. W. ELLIS, JR.

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

for service as set forth in the following:

   CITATION:   

"For meritorious service while serving with the First Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 16 July 1970 to 27 May 1971. Throughout this period, Corporal Ellis performed his duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner. Initially assigned as a Grenadier with Company M, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, he skillfully accomplished all assigned tasks and consistently provided his command with outstanding support. Participating in Operation Imperial Lake, he repeatedly distinguished himself by his courage and composure under fire while exploiting each enemy contact to the maximum extent and inspiring his fellow Marines to greater efforts. Particularly noteworthy were his actions on 15 November 1970 during a search and clear operation when his unit came under intense enemy fire. Reacting instantly, Corporal Ellis fearlessly maneuvered into an advantageous firing position and delivered accurate, suppressive fire on the enemy soldiers. Reassigned as an Intelligence Scout with the Second Battalion, he continued to distinguish himself by his excellent performance of duty while providing his command with valuable intelligence information concerning hostile operations. As a result of his diligent and resourceful efforts throughout his tour in the Republic of Vietnam, the operational effectiveness of his unit was greatly enhanced. By his initiative, superb professionalism, and loyal devotion to duty, Corporal Ellis earned the respect of all who served with him and upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."
