The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the NAVY COMMENDATION MEDAL to

LANCE CORPORAL FATE A. WARREN, JR.

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

for service as set forth in the following:

   CITATION:

"For meritorious service while serving as a Machine Gun Team Leader with Company M, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 23 June 1968 to 27 April 1969. Throughout this period, Lance Corporal Warren performed his duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner. Working tirelessly and with meticulous attention to detail, he expeditiously accomplished all assigned tasks and consistently provided his unit with outstanding support. Participating in six major combat operations, including Operations Mameluke Thrust, Maui Peak and Taylor Common, he repeatedly distinguished himself by his courage and composure under fire. On 13 August 1968, the lead elements of Company M came under intense small arms and automatic weapons fire and sustained several casualties. Without hesitation, Lance Corporal Warren deployed his team and directed a heavy volume of suppressive fire at the hostile emplacements. Observing two wounded Marines lying in area dangerously exposed to the enemy fire, he fearlessly rushed across the fire-swept terrain and moved the casualties to a relatively safe position. Subsequently, he led an aggressive assault against the hostile emplacements and was instrumental in forcing the enemy to break contact and and withdraw. As a result of his diligent and resourceful efforts, the operational effectiveness of his unit was greatly enhanced. By his initiative, superb professionalism and loyal devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Warren earned the respect of all who served with him and upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."

The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.

FOR THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY.
