CORPORAL CHARLES THOMAS GOEBEL

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

for service as set forth in the following:

   CITATION:

For heroic achievement while serving as a Forward Air Controller with Company M, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 September 1967. During Operation Swift in Quang Tri Province, Company M was attacked by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Corporal GOEBEL exhibited superior professionalism as he maintained radio contact with gunships and Marine observation aircraft and skillfully coordinated the developing air/ground situation. Displaying exceptional composure, he constantly advised pilots and ground commanders of the tactical situation as it occurred and skillfully directed air support missions within 200 meters of friendly lines. Throughout the night, with the aid of a flareship on station, he tirelessly coordinated close air support, frequently exposing himself to enemy small arms fire and bursting mortar shells. His determined efforts and initiative were instrumental in inflicting heavy losses on the enemy including 140 probable killed. By his superior professional ability, resolute fighting spirit and inspiring devotion to duty, Corporal GOEBEL was instrumental in maintaining the integrity of his company's position and thereby upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Corporal GOEBEL is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
